Working over Deceivers

I. The perilous times (3:1-4) require faithful Christian ministers (2 Timothy 3:10-11).

A. We must be teaching the truths of the Kingdom.

1. Titus 1:7-9 -- For a bishop must be . . . holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

2. Ephesians 4:11-14 --And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers . . . that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting.

B. We must be living the life of righteous example (Titus 1:1-10)

1. But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine:

a. that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience;
b. the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—
c. that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
d. to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
e. Likewise exhort the young men to be sober-minded,

2. In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,

a. one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.
b. Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back,
c. not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

C. We must be clear in our purpose.

1. Acts 11:23 -- When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord.

2. 2 Timothy 1:9 -- who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,

D. We must demonstrate strong faith.

1. Romans 10:17 -- So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

2. 1 Corinthians 2:5 -- That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

3. 1 Corinthians 16:13 -- Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

4. 1 Timothy 1:19 -- Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck

5. 1 Peter 5:8-9 -- Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

E. We must develop longsuffering.

1. Colossians 1:11 -- Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness

2. Colossians 3:12 -- Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering

3. Hebrews 6:12 -- That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

F. We must continually display love.

1. John 13:35 -- By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

2. Romans 5:5 -- the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us

3. Romans 12:9 -- Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

4. 1 Corinthians 13:1 -- Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

5. 1 John 5:3 -- For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

G. We must discipline ourselves with endurance.

1. Romans 5:3-4 -- And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience (endurance); and patience, experience; and experience, hope:

2. 2 Corinthians 1:6 -- And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer:

3. Revelation 14:12 -- Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

H. We must experience persecutions and afflictions.

1. Matthew 13:20-21 --   But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

2. Romans 8:18 -- For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

3. 2 Corinthians 12:10 -- Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

I. We must endure (bear it) until we are delivered.

1. 1 Corinthians 10:13 -- There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

2. 1 Peter 2:19 -- For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

3. Matthew 6:13 -- And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

4. Colossians 1:13 -- Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

5. 2 Timothy 4:17 -- Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

6. 2 Timothy 4:18 -- And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

7. 2 Peter 2:9 -- The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

II. The pressures of evil men will continue – therefore so must we.

A. The godly will suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12)

1. Psalm 37:12 -- The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.

2. Matthew 10:22 -- And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

3. John 15:19-20 -- If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.  Remember the word that I said unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

4. 1 Peter 4:12-13 -- Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

III. The Deceivers will continue to deceive others and themselves.

A. Evil men and seducers are everywhere.

1. 1 John 5:19 -- And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

2. 2 Timothy 3:13 -- But evil men and seducers (wailers; howlers) shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

3. Luke 11:24-26 -- When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.  And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.  Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

B. Deceivers work on others but become victims of their own deception.

1. Matthew 24:11 -- And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

2. Matthew 24:24 -- For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

3. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 -- And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

IV. The job of the committed Christian is to continue with knowledge of the Truth.

A. We must continue in what we have learned.

1. 2 Timothy 1:13 -- Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

2. 2 Timothy 2:2 -- And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3. 1 Timothy 4:16 -- Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

B. We must continue in that of which we have been assured.

1. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 -- For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

2. Hebrews 6:11 -- And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

3. Hebrews 10:22 -- Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

4. Isaiah 32:17-18 -- The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.  My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, In secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places
