Spiritual Armor: The Sword of the Spirit

I. The “whole armor” is required.

A. The Truth Belt

1. It involves, of course, a knowledge of the Word of God (John 17:17)

2. It is the greatest defense against deception and lie (2 Corinthians 4:2).

B. The Breastplate of Righteousness

1. It is the “abiding” in God that secures righteousness (1 John 3:5-10)

2. It is the greatest defense against the horrible consequences of sin (Ephesians 5:1-6; Colossians 3:1-6).

C. The Shoes of Preparation

1. It requires being “ready always” (1 Peter 3:15)

2. It is the greatest defense against a false gospel (Jude 4)

D. The Shield of Faith

1. It comes by “hearing” the Word of God (Romans 10:17)

2. It is the greatest defense against the “wiles” of the devil (Ephesians 6:16; 2 Corinthians 2:11)

E. The Helmet of Salvation

1. It is the relationship to Christ (Romans 8:15-17)

2. It is the greatest defense against mental incapacity (Romans 12:2; 1 Peter 1:13)

II. The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God – our attack weapon.

A. The Sword of the Spirit is specifically defined as the Word of God

1. It is the weapon of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 6:17)

2. It is living, eternal and powerful (1 Peter 1:23-25)

3. It is not bound by natural conditions (2 Timothy 2:9)

4. It can grow, multiply, and prevail (Acts 12:24; 6:7; 19:20)

B. The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God in all aspects of His ministry

1. The Word strikes deeply in the conviction of unbelievers (John 16:7-15)

2. The Word of God is active in the operation of the new birth (1 Peter 1:23)

3. The faith to believe comes through the Word (Romans 10:17)

4. The empowerment of believers to preach and witness comes through the Word (Acts 4:29-33)

5. The effective working of God’s will in the life of the believer comes through the Word (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

III. The Sword of the Spirit is the only effective weapon for spiritual battles.

A. The Sword of the Spirit is able to penetrate and divide the spiritual elements (Hebrews 4:12)

1. It is alive and powerful (Isaiah 55:11)

2. It is sharper that the two-edged sword (Revelation 1:16; 2:12; 19:15)

3. It judges the “ponderings” and the “purposes” of the heart (1 Corinthians 4:5)

4. It penetrates even to the point of making a distinction “between the soul and the spirit” (Hebrews 4:12)

a. Mankind is a tri-unity being (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
b. Mankind must have the Word operate on our souls (James 1:21)
c. Mankind needs the “Spirit” of the Word not just the “letter” (2 Corinthians 3:6; 3:17)
d. Mankind needs the Spirit of the Word because he gives “life” (John 6:63)

B. The Sword of the Spirit is “capable” through God to destroy all the spiritual strongholds of evil (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

1. It can demolish every “castle” of evil.

2. It can destroy every “computation” (strategy) of an enemy.

3. It can countermand every “high and lofty” (arrogant, prideful, elite) matter that resists the knowledge of God.

4. It can “capture” every thought into obedience to Christ.

C. The Sword of the Spirit must be properly used to be effective

1. We must “hear” it (Luke 11:28)

2. We must “receive” it (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

3. We must “rightly divide” it (2 Timothy 2:15)

4. We must “do” it (James 1:22)

5. We must “sow” it (Luke 8:5-15)

6. We must “speak” it with boldness (Acts 4:31)

7. We must “preach” it all the time (2 Timothy 4:2)

8. We must “glorify” it with gladness (Acts 13:48)

9. We must “teach” it to many people (Acts 18:11)

D. The Sword of the Spirit will never fail nor will It prove unsatisfactory  (Isaiah 55:11)

1. It is magnified above the name of God (Psalm 138:2)

2. It will be fulfilled for us (Psalm 119:38)

3. It will enable us to answer enemies (Psalm 119:42)

4. It is forever settled in heaven (Psalm 119:89)

5. It is very pure (Psalm 119:140) and true (Psalm 119:160)

IV. The Sword of the Spirit is also for our own protection.

A. The Word of God is sufficient for all our spiritual needs (2 Peter 1:3-4)

1. It enables us to clean up our lives (Psalm 119:9)

2. It will help us to keep from sinning (Psalm 119:11)

3. It will revive us when we are down (Psalm 119:25, 50, 107, 154)

4. It will strengthen us when we are weak (Psalm 119:28)

5. It will give us hope (Psalm 119:74, 81, 114, 147)

6. It will provide enlightenment (Psalm 119:105)

7. It will sustain us when we falter (Psalm 119:116)

8. It will order our steps (Psalm 119:133)

9. It will give us understanding (Psalm 119:169)

B. The Word of God is to be active in our everyday lives (James 1:22-25)

1. We are to keep (guard) the teachings (Psalm 119:17, 34, 57, 69, 106, 168)

2. We are to love the Word of god (Psalm 119:97, 110, 119, 127, 165)

3. We are to meditate in It (Psalm 119:148)

4. We are to rejoice in It (Psalm 119:162)

5. We are to speak of It (Psalm 119:172)

C. The Word of God can be rendered ineffective by our lifestyle

1. We can nullify by our traditions (Mark 7:13)

2. We can corrupt by our deceit (2 Corinthians 2:17; 4:2)

3. We can blaspheme by our behavior (Titus 2:5)
