Remember Eternal Truth

I. The Epistle is built around instructions, encouragement, and examples.

A. There are the initial commands.

1. We must “stir up the gift of God.”

2. We must not be “ashamed” of the Lord’s testimony or the Gospel message.

3. We must “hold fast” the pattern of wholesome words.

4. We must “keep” (guard) the gift(s) and the words.

5. We must be “strong” (enabled” by the gift(s)

6. We must “commit” what we have learned to other faithful men.

7. We must “consider” the examples and the promises.

B. There are the initial promises and examples.

1. We are given spirit of “power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

2. We have been called with a “holy calling . . . before the world began.”

3. We are able to “know” and be “persuaded” that God “is able to keep” all that we have entrusted to Him.

4. We are able know the enemies of the Kingdom and benefit from the surprising friends who minister to us.

5. We must consider the lifestyles of three major examples.

a. A soldier who “endures hardness” and does not “entangle” himself in worldly obligations so that he can “please” his Commander.
b. An athlete who “strives” for the victors reward, but must do so “lawfully”
c. A farmer who works hard, having invested his own “seed,” expecting to eat from his own harvest.

II. The command to “remember” is stressed in 2 Timothy 2:8-14.

A. The memory is to be fixed like a “memorial” from history.

1. The Greek noun form of this verb is often translated “memorial.”

2. The Old Testament cites several examples.

a. The Ark of the Covenant and the furniture (Exodus 31:7)
b. The rod of Aaron that budded (Numbers 17:8-10)
c. The stone tablets of the Ten Commandments (1 Kings 8:9)
d. The Twelve Stones from the river Jordan (Joshua 4:7-9)
e. The Passover celebration (Exodus 12:14)

B. The lineage of Jesus Christ is to be a memorial.

1. John 7:42 -- Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

a. The long line of prophetic promises is in view.
b. The unique virgin-born God-Man of eternity and of history is a memorial.

2. Romans 1:1-3 -- Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh

C.  The resurrection of Jesus Christ is to be a memorial.

1. 2 Timothy 2:8 -- Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel.

2. Romans 1:4 -- And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

3. Acts 17:31 -- Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

D. The active witness of the Gospel is to be a memorial.

1. Unjust suffering because of the Gospel is a memorial.

a. John 15:18 -- If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
b. John 15:25 -- But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
c. 1 Peter 4:14 -- If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

2. Nothing can “bind” the Word of God.

a. Acts 28:31 – [Paul in prison] preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
b. Philippians 1:14 -- And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

E. The salvation of the elect is an eternal memorial.

1. Acts 13:48 -- And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

2. Ephesians 2:10 -- For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

3. Romans 8:29-30 -- For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.  Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

III. The “faithful saying” is a memory device (2 Timothy 2:11-13).

A. If we are dead with [Christ] we will also live with [Christ].

1. Galatians 2:20 -- I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

2. Ephesians 2:1, 5, 8, 13 -- And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; . . . Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) . . . For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God . . . But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

B. If we suffer (endure) we will also reign with him.

1. 2 Thessalonians 1:4-5 -- So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:  Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

2. 1 Peter 4:14 -- If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

3. Romans 8:17 -- And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint–heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

4. Romans 5:17 -- For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

C. If we deny [Christ] he will also deny us.

1. Matthew 10:32 -- Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

2. 1 John 4:15 -- Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

3. Revelation 3:5 -- He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

4. Matthew 10:33 -- But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

5. Titus 1:15-16 -- Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.  They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

6. 1 John 2:22 -- Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

7. Matthew 7:21 -- Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

8. Luke 6:46  And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

8. Luke 13:25 -- When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:

D. If we do not believe [in Christ], He abides faithful.  He cannot deny Himself.

1. Romans 3:4 -- God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar

2. Deuteronomy 32:4 -- He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

3. Psalm 119:160 -- Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

4. 2 Corinthians 1:20 -- For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

5. John 14:6 -- Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

IV. The memorials prevent ruin from unprofitable words (2 Timothy 2:14).

A. This summary command assumes an active “memory.”

1. Prompted by the Holy Spirit.

a. John 14:26 -- But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you.

2. Promoted by godly leaders.

a. Titus 3:1 -- Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work

B. This memory is to prevent wasteful and ruinous activity.

1. 1 Timothy 4:1-2 -- I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

2. 1 Timothy 1:5-7 -- Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: from which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

3. Acts 17:21 --   (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
