Preparation for the Law

I. The events on route to Mount Sinai are worth summarizing.

A. The appearance of the Glory Cloud (Exodus 13:17-22).

1. They were led through Sinai, not through Philistia (13:17-18)

2. They were guided by God’s “Pillar” (cloud and fire)

B. The chase by Pharaoh (Exodus 14:1-12).

1. God would “be honoured upon Pharaoh” (14:1-4)

2. Pharaoh took 600 chariots after Israel (14:5-9)

3. Israel was terrified and complained (14:10-12)

C. The miracle at the Red Sea (Exodus 14:13-31).

1. “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD” which he will shew to you to day” (14:13-18)

2. Pharaoh and armies held back by the Pillar (14:19-20)

3. God parted the Red Sea using an East wind (14:21)

4. Israel crossed, Pharaoh and armies were drowned (14:22-29)

5. Israel “was saved that day…saw the great work…feared the LORD, and believed the LORD…” (14:20-21)

D. The bitter water made sweet (Exodus 15:22-26).

1. Israel went into the wilderness of Shur 3 days journey

2. The waters at Marah were “bitter” – to “prove” Israel (15:23-25)

3. God showed Moses a tree to cure the waters (15:25)

4. God promised to care for Israel if they would obey (15:26)

E. The giving of manna (Exodus 16).

1. Israel “murmured” against the LORD (16:2-12)

2. God sent “manna” to feed them – they still complained

a. Gather enough for household for one day
b. Gather enough for two days before Sabbath
c. Disobedience resulted in stench and sickness

3. God sent quails as an “answer” (16:13; Numbers 11:31-35)

4. God used this as His “example” of listening to His word (Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4)

F. The water from the rock (Exodus 17:1-7).

1. Thirst again caused “murmuring” at Rephidim

2. God provided water from the Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4)

G. The victory over the Amalekites (Exodus 17:8-16).

1. Amalek instigated a war with Israel at Rephidim

2. Joshua was commissioned to lead the response

3. Moses held up God’s Rod and Israel prevailed

4. Aaron and Hur assisted Moses; hands raised, Israel prevailed

5. The Amalekites came under God’s continual punishment for their unprovoked attack against Israel.  Eventually they disappeared as a people group.

H. The political structure of Israel was set up (Exodus 18)

1. Jethro (Moses father-in-law) gave advice (18:13-24)

2. Elders were chosen and other “rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of ten.” (18:25)

3. The “hard” issues went to Moses; the “small matters” to others

I. The People were sanctified in preparation for the giving of the Law (Exodus 19)

1. Israel camped before Mt Sinai (Mt Horeb) in the 3rd month after leaving Egypt (Exodus 19:1-2)

2. God reveals His purpose: Israel is to be “a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation” (19:6)

3. Moses challenges all Israel, and all Israel affirms that they will obey the “voice” of God (19:7-8)

4. Israel is “sanctified” (cleansed in preparation) for their meeting with YAHWEH (19:9-25)

a. Personal cleansing is required
b. Physical boundaries are set around the mountain
c. Three days of personal sobriety and celibacy are demanded

J. The LORD called Israel before Him at the foot of Mt Sinai (Exodus 19:16-25)

1. The mountain was covered with a thick cloud amid thunder and lightning

2. Trumpet sound was long and loud – the people trembled.

3. The LORD descended in a fire and smoke, causing “great” quaking of the mountain.

a. God called Moses up by a clear voice
b. God insisted that Moses go back down and separate the people from the mountain

4. Moses and Aaron go back up to face God on the mountain.

5. God now speaks the Ten Commandments – all the nation of Israel hears the words and is justly terrified.
