The Name of Jesus

I. The immediate context is built around a series of instructions.

A. We are to be model “citizens” of the Kingdom (Philippians 1:27-30).

c. We are to “look out for” others

B. We are to emulate the “attitude” of our Lord Jesus (Philippians 2:5-8)

1. It is the word that emphasizes “attitude” of mind – to be disposed.

a. Colossians 3:2 -- Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
b. He did not grasp after equality with God.
c. He “emptied” Himself.
d. He “took on the form of a servant.”
e. He “was made” in the likeness of men.

2. It is demonstrated even to the death on the cross.

II. The work of Christ on the Cross brings eternal recognition (Philippians 2:9-11).

A. He is highly exalted.

1. Acts 2:33 -- Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

2. Acts 5:31 -- Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

3. Revelation 4:11 and 5:9-14 -- Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created…. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof…. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation….Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.  And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

4. The entire living creation voices its worship

a. Every living creature in heaven
b. Every living creature on and under the earth
c. Every living creature that is in the sea

III. The exultation of Christ includes a unique name.

A. The name which is above (beyond, superior to) all other names.

1. Psalm 72:17-19 -- His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.  Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.

2. Revelation 19:11, 16 -- And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war….And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

B. The name at which every knee will bow.

1. Isaiah 45:22-23 -- Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

2. Isaiah 9:6-7 -- For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

3. Revelation 11:15 -- And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

C. The name at which every tongue shall confess

1. That Jesus is the Creator

a. This is a foundational doctrine
b. Genesis 1; John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:1-3
c. John 10:37-38 -- If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
d. The Gospel of John is built around 7 great miracle of creation.
e. Revelation 4:11 -- Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

2. That Jesus is the only way of salvation.

a. Acts 4:12 -- Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
b. John 14:6 -- Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
c. Isaiah 42:5-8 -- Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk there….I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another

3. That Jesus is the Head of the church.

a. Ephesians 1:20-22 -- Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church
b. Colossians 1:18-20 -- And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; and, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

4. That Jesus is eternal.

a. Hebrews 13:8 -- Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.
b. Psalm 102:25-27 -- Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
c. Revelation 1:8 -- I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

1 John 5:9-13 -- If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
